Oxy-fuel wire spray gun questions
Hello,
I'm a new member. We have a project that is trying to reproduce some work done 30 years ago that involved a Metco 10e gun. I can get one of these guns but replacement parts are limited. There are other guns: 11E, 14E, etc., which are apparently newer but I don't know the difference. The question is are there newer (and more supported) guns that can do what the 10e does and perhaps even better? The project involves spraying an alloy wire that has a very high melting point. Thus, the thermal energy produced by the gun should be high. Second, we are trying to get the finest spray as possible. That is, the smallest droplet formation in the plume. Based on those two criteria, what gun would you recommend?

Many thanks,

Joe Strauss

Hey there, we run a Metco 16E which is the newest combustion wire model, with great success. It has better safety features than the 14E, otherwise works the same. Which wire are you spraying?

Hi Pakalano,

Thank you for that recommendation. We found a company that makes a copy of the 14e gun for a reasonable price, which should do for this R&D project. We are spraying wires made from platinum group metals and alloys. That's why the need for the high temperature.
Regards,
Joe

Hi Joe Strauss
If you need an economic system to spray, and similar of your 10E, (that was the best gun and still you can find spares), now if roughness obtained with traditional wire flame spray is not good for you, you could solve with HVOF W100, W2000 gun, I use to spray molybdenum wire with very smooth coating surface, good bonding and porosity bellow 1%

Best regards
Luigi

RE: Oxy-fuel wire spray gun questions
Hello Luigi,

Thank you for that suggestion. One detail I left out is that I am not spraying a surface. I will be spraying into an open vessel and collecting the solidified droplets as powder. We are trying to make fine powder, which is why I'm looking for a gun that will make the finest droplets in the plume. I just did a google search on the W100 and W2000 HVOF guns but I didn't come up with anything. Who is the manufacturer of these guns?

Thank you,

Joe
