Grinding questions and my personal information
I've been grinding everything from aluminum to carbide and everything in between. 26 years experience. I'll answer any questions from wheel selection to dressing, speeds and feeds or whatever questions you might have.

RE: Grinding questions
Do you have any good results grinding nickel-base alloys round bars on centerless grinding machine?

RE: Grinding questions
It depends on how round and straight the piece is. Are you through grinding or crush grinding? What issues are you having? Anything can be ground to any tolerance with the proper setup and wheel selection.

RE: Grinding questions
Thanks for the answer. You are right. We made a test today on the 160 mm round bar and the process went quite problem free. We are planning to do the same with 350 mm bar and then we will see the results... If crush grinding means "to the specific length" a through grinding is "the whole length" - we use through grinding, if not please correct me (I am not native and can't find a good translation).

RE: Grinding questions
Crush grinding (plunge grinding) is when we put a part in and plung it. You can plung grind if the length of the part is shorter than the wheel. Through grinding is where you put the part in and it feeds through from one end to the other.

Hi Rage;

I am interested to hear your recommendations on finish grinding parameters for plasma sprayed Metco 72F-NS and 73F-NS-1. Diameters range from 5.4 to 15" and surface profile must be less than 30 Ra. Wheel sizes currently used range from 3 - 6" depending on diameter being ground. Currently using diamond - I'm not 100% sure of the grade but can check further if required.

In addition, do you have experience in turning thermal sprayed coatings? It seems that up to date information is scarce.

Kind regards,

RE: Grinding questions
Thats pretty much what I grind on lately refurbishing hydraulic cylinders. My main grinder has a 16" diameter wheel by 2" wide. We have it set up with the 3m belt system. The 70 micron belt will get me a 35 ra finish and the 40 micron belt gets me a 9 ra with plenty of spark out passes. The 20 micro belt gives a 2 ra with spark out passes. I use plenty of coolant to keep it flushed well and cool. The proper spray parameters and spark out will effect your finish. Light passes of .0002" infeed for the last .002 works best for me or i find more micro bursting or material being pulled that most mistake for porosity that will give you a high ra. I do have a diamond 120 grit wheel from norton but i find that i cant get the low ra with it. You might want to look into a larger wheel. I woud say that that its your limiting factor.

As for turning HVOF, ive done a little for experimenting for customers. Having a thick enough layer before finish size and very light cuts is all I've found to work for most of what we do. My works website has recommended amounts but im not sure where they reference from. Hale performance coatings in Toledo Ohio.

RE: Grinding questions
Thank you very much. I realized that I didn't mention that the small diameters, 5.4", are I.D's. The diameters from 6" up to 15" are O.D's. Regarding thickness amounts, I've found that about .005" to .008" of coating stock seems to be enough when grinding. When turning, .012" - .015" seems to do the trick, depending of powder type (coarse or fine cut). Thanks very much again for your suggestions, I am in Ohio as well, just east of Cleveland.

I'm going to take pics of everything I use and keep it updated as i try new belts, wheels and other things such as disks for my 90 degree angle grinder. Im 6 months in HVOF and we're extremely busy so i have to keep up with whats best for this area. Ceramic is the way im leaning for everything but carbide right now.

That sounds great, I'd be delighted to hear of your results.

RE: Grinding questions and my personal information
I do a lot of repair work mostly hydraulic cylinders that are Chrome plated. I started off using what the company had to offer but I have since dealt with many other companies that supply other products to help aid in stripping and grinding of everything from for 420 stainless, 316 stainless and other coatings that we deal with. The ceramic belt im using is by far better than the 3m belts ive used. At $12 a 3m belt and going through 3 belts for a job. I now use 1 VSM belt at $5 to strip 3 jobs. Its incredible the difference. I only have a 60 grit but i can get finner belts for better finishes. Ceramic wheels can also be used instead of any other wheel that you may be using at the present time vs the belt system im using. The cost will be slightly greater but the return will be 10 fold and its great for anything I've run into. Im also using 2" and 3" disks for cleaning chamfers. They are aggressive and cut through anything but carbide. This post is for anything but carbide!!! I've had nothing but success with this stuff. Im very aggressive and have been grinding for 26 years.

Does anyone use VSM products or know of a different product?

Hello
For rought arc spray metcoloy 2 surface, my resin bonded diamond wheel broke apart. So i started machining with cbn cutters in lathe. Whats your suggestion for it?
