Adhesion to Shot Peened Titanium
I have an aerospace application to plasma spray WcCo 12% onto shot peened Ti 6-4. The powder material is Metco 72F-NS or Praxair Wc-114
I am spraying onto test specimens of Ti 6-4 which have been shot peened to the intensity as the production part. The parts and specimens are grit blasted with virgin Aluminum Oxide 60 mesh grit to 100 Ra. I am experiencing interface separation when examining the coating microstructure. On unpeened samples, there is no separation. I have even shotpeened half of a sample and sure enough, only the peened half presents interface separation. Also, I've tried cleaning the samples with some light abrasive (Scothbrite) and acetone with the same results. I assume the problem is the hardness of the peened surface however, I am at a loss to remedy the situation. I am going to experiment with various grit blast pressures in an attempt to improve the situation. I would appreciate any input from people with experience in this application. Thank you.

RE: Adhesion to Shot Peened Titanium
Have you tried (or can you try) and cleaning Ti acid cleaning solution. You may be accidentally laying down a lubricant or contamination layer during the shot peening that is not removed by the grit blasting.
