High Temp Adhesive for TSA Adhesion test
Colleagues,

Can anyone recommend an adhesive for adhesion testing - bond strength no more than 20MPa that can be used on a high temp (300oC), in service process vessel. Current adhesive (Araldite) cures too fast to provide enough bond strength.

Hi wrjordan

I think 300 C is probably well above the service temperatures of majority of bond strength testing adhesives.

I can only suggest trying one of the 'one part' epoxy adhesives that normally require oven curing Wink in your case it won't need the oven.

Thanks. I had a recommendation for 3M Scotchweld 2214 which is a 1 part epoxy as you suggest. The user says it works ok, however, the glue has to be kept in a fridge (<3C) which makes it a lot of fun to use in a refinery in Asia - think remove from fridge, take (walking) to site, climb up scaffolding, set test dolly, climb back down scaffolding, walk back to fridge all in 35C / 80% humidity, wearing full PPE!

300C even tests the limits of the high temp epoxies. I can't say that I've ever had to get into testing at these kind of temps., but if you find you are getting a lot of cohesive failures within the adhesive layer, then you may have to look into more complex chemistries. Try the epoxy first, and failing that you may need to look into inorganics or organic-inorganics like polysiloxanes.

Good luck.
