Reg: Anti stick coatings for moulds and dies.
Dear Friends,

Can any one let me know what kind of Anti Stick thermal spray powder can be used on Moulds and Dies of automobile industries.

Any kind of Source for procurement of PTFE and teflon based powder would also be helpful for me.

Thanking you in advance.

Hi Dileep,

I have tried some anti stick coatings on some moulds for MAGNA POWERTRAIN but it is not easy as the geometry is very difficult for a thermal sprayed coating to have a equal thickness and quality. You have to spray different angles and rotate the part and even then it is the question if it will work!

We have tried an aluminum oxide material and zirconium oxide but not really an improvement as we had hoped. I am not sure exactly what is the shape of your parts but in our case it were mold for aluminum die casting machine for Audi and VW gearboxes.

Hi

looking in the field I have not seen any Thermal Spray Process for this application. Another technology used in Japan is called the TD process

TD Process
TD process produces high-functional coating formed from carbide including niobium, and chromium. In the process, the workpiece is dipped into the high-temperature salt bath to be coated uniformly. The coating is applicable to workpiece of complicated shape and achieves high hardness of Hv3200-3900. TD process is a vital technology and obtains good evaluation in mold production industry.

At what temperature do the molds operate? Many companies spray carbide coatings and impregnate them with PTFE. This produces a tough, non-stick surface, but it cannot take high temperatures.
