The color of TBC turns out to be very tricky and it depends on powder chemistry, i.e. impurity oxides content, and processing condition. For coatings heat treated at temperatures higher than 800 degree C, yellow coating means low purity and white coating indicates high purity.
I did some work on the color of TBCs and have a paper in ITSC06 proceedings on this. If you send me an email, I can send you the paper.
