: Hello all,

: I am looking for a way to produce a wear resistant coating on polycarbonate (PC). This is a thermoplastic that is usually used at temperatures up to approx. 130C. (The same material is used to produce compact discs)
: I have been thinking about spraying zinc. Is this possible? Will the plastic withstand the temperature of the spraying process? And will adhesion be higher than that of a glued sheet metal on the surface?

: Thank you very much for your help

Hi Ben

It is possible to thermal spray zinc coatings and other some coatings onto this type of substrate. It is important that care is taken in the spray process to keep plastic substrates cool, this along with good surface preparation is the key to successful coatings. Not sure about comparative bond strengths between adhesive cladding metal and thermal spray coatings, I guess they would be in the same ball park. At the end of the day I think you will need to test both approaches and compare performance and cost.

Regards Gordon
