Arc Spray and then Plasma spray? Is this common?
I have bolt that is made of 17-4PH CRES Steel. It has a arc spray of Ni-Al base coat and then top coating of plasma spray, Al-Bronze (51F-NS). Does anybody know if this combo is feasible? or if this combo is normally used?

Does a base coat and top coat normally give more bond strength?

What about just using Metco 445, the selfbonding Al-Bronze to get rid of the two spray process?

Also does anybody know what NS means in many Metco sprays?

Normally you do exactly the opposite: first a thin, high-quality and expensive bond coat of Ni-Al by means of plasma spraying and then thick, cheap and inferior top coat from bronze by means of arc spraying. Only in this way is it economically sensible.
Of course, you can apply both layers with plasma (expensive, but better variant) or both by means of arc (cheap and inferior), only the way: first arc bond coat and then plasma top coat does not make sense.
Also single layer of Metco 445, applied by plasma is useful.

Cu10Al powder is very expensive, the best and economic solution is Cu10Al wire with arc spray system, because is better than APS spray as Bond strenght and coating quality, I normally used this material as bond coat it has about 60 MPa, intead of APS Ni5Al that ussually reach at least 45 MPa, so you can use both solution, it depend of the specification you have from your customer, Arc spray of Ni5Al wire is better than APS bond, and is very economic coating, and if you want an more economic coating you can use Cu10Al, with arc spray, if you use a good arc spray system, of coarse no Valuarc or Smartarc coatings, that have bad quality, you can reach goods results
