HVOF System Considerations
Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of determining a suitable HVOF system that I would be able to use for a wide-range of applications (general purpose). I have read a decent amount about HVAF systems and it seems the consensus is they are suitable for specialised applications while HVOF systems are more general purpose. So here I am today researching the different considerations to take in choosing a system:

1) Liquid Fuel vs. Gas Fuel
2) Water Cool vs. Air Cool
3) Axial Feed vs. Radial Feed

I just wanted to hear opinions on these different factors as well as any other considerations I may have overlooked. Thank you.

RE: HVOF System Considerations
1. Liquid Fuel' s speed is higher, more expensive. For some application you can spray over mm' s WC only with Liquid Fuel.
2. For stability, water cooling with a chiller is important. For longer operations you must choose water cooling.
3. First two comment may include wrong or depending informations Big Grin

Hi Josgates,

For the selection of a coating system, the first questions are: which parts do you have and which coating materials do you want to use. Your three questions are secondary.

Hi Josgates:

You say general purpose, I assume this means industrial applications from a wide range of industries, and large variety of components in small volumes?

Have you ever done any thermal spray before? If not, you really need to consider what parts you are going to coat, and all the accessories you need to make the system effective, grinding, surface preparation, etc.

Hi thank you for your prompt response. Yes by general purpose I mean industrial applications and exactly how you described it.

And yes you are right these are all good things to consider but currently I am looking at the HVOF system itself first and then building around that. I've actually seen that Kermetico has convertible guns that allow both HVOF and HVAF. With them as an example of what I'm looking for in general purpose (versatility) I would be looking at the C6 rather than C7 due to the C7's inability to coat smaller parts and the C6's versatility to do small and medium.

So that's kind of how my thought process is currently. I know it will seem silly not to consider the other things you've mentioned first but I am just in the research phase to see how much I could do with this technology.

Thanks.

RE: HVOF System Considerations
Josgates, the Kermetico system is really robust and proven technology especially with the C range of torches. You can really learn about this well on their website and webinars. As a system its very flexible and can be adapted to many applications. The C6 is a good torch to start with and would suit most parts, and still ahve a good coating, rapid deposition rated, and good DE. good luck
