: Dear Gordon,

: What kind of coating is recommended for underwater sections of the ships prone to corrosion? What sealant would you recommend ... could you let me know of any companies which may the sealant ?

: What would the life expectancy of the coating be for underwater sections of the ships with sealant and without sealant ?

Arc sprayed aluminium.

Traditionally, special zinc chromate primer (like metcoseal PR-primer)followed by aluminium vinyl sealer (like metcoseal AV), but other sealers or paint systems can also be applied, particularly if fouling is a problem. The aluminium coating is the primary anti-corrosion layer, even after erosion and loss of sealers/paints the aluminium will continue giving protection. Most of the thermal spray consumable providers should have suitable products.

The life expectancy is primarily related to the environment and thickness of coating. 150 micrometres aluminium should give 20 and possibly many more years of protection (assuming no excessive erosion or mechanical damage)The effect of sealers/paint systems is difficult to quantify, but generally should retard the loss of the aluminium coating initially, prolonging life by maybe a few more years.
