This is dependent on hardness test method used and the hardness of the coating.
Rockwell superficial HR-15-N may only be suitable for hard coatings in excess of 83 HR-15-N at 300 microns thick.
For Vickers hardness the general recommended minimum thickness of coating should be at least 1.5 times the diagonal of the indentation.
