continuous casting rolls
Hello,
I am looking for ways how to increase wear resistant of continuous casting rolls Rolleyes. At this moment as I hear the most popular way is to put on some kind of welding material. But maybe it is possible to use PTA process, or there is some special self fluxing materials for these rolls?
Maybe somebody know what are the last achievements in this field and the best methods for increasing durability of these rolls?
Thanks,
Arturas

RE: continuous casting rolls
It is my understanding that the most cost effective way of recovering the con cast rolls and also achieve good service life is via FCAW welding. One the key players in the industry for supply and service is Welding Alloys of the UK, try to reach jeanluc.desir@welding-alloys.com

RE: continuous casting rolls
Yes, typically these rolls have been coated with 400 series sub arc wires, although for the foot rolls behind the water cooled mould where the temperature is at it's highest solid Stellite 250/251 or welded Stellite 250/251 has been used.

There was a paper "New Coatings for Continuous Casting Rolls" by A.Sanz where tests were done with HVOF WC17Co coating + chemical slurry. These tests were quite promising. I have been trying to find out if any further work has been done. You can find this paper at https://www.sciencedirect.com, it was in the Surface and Coatings Technology magazine.

I also know that Stellite/Hettiger did some tests a few years ago with a high deposition PTA torch but the problem was getting the 400 series powder price down to the same price as trhe wire which was impossible.

Hi,
Please refer to my book on 'Advnced Thermally Assisted Surface Engineering Processes',Kluwer Academic Publishers(now Springer,NY),2004, where the subject has been discussed in details.

RE: continuous casting rolls
Hello Arturas,
I believe, the most common and economical way for concast roll is still using SAW welding or welding strip, due to their low cost of equipments and high deposition rates.

Arlen
