oxides APS process
Good morning everyone,
i start dealing with thermal spray process few months ago.
When you find oxides in APS process (TBC), which parameter do you think is useful to change?

Powder feed rate, primary gas ,secondary gas?

Thanks for your advice and collaboration.

Hi giuiori75,
TBC's are oxides, so I am assuming you are referring to your bond-coat?

Which type of plasma equipment are you using and which type of gasses for Primary and secondary for your plasma chemistry?

John

RE: oxides APS process
Hi John,
thanks for your reply.
Yes i refer to bond coat, NiCoCrAly.
Plasma equipment is Plasma Technik ABB robot.
Primary gas is Ar, secondary gas is H2.

Hi giuiori75,
It would also be good to know which NiCoCrAly you are using. Powder size range distribution and powder morphology (particle shape) plays a big role in helping determine parameters.

I'm assuming you are using the PT-F4?

John

hi Giuiori
First of all do you must be sure that parameters set well done by an expert, and using technicall informations from technical bulletin, after this, check the gun for some cooling water contamination within the gun head, and at least check the perfect setting of the spray powder in the plasma plume, check for gun geometry and nozzle alignment, after this was made, you can change some thing.
Best regards
Luigi

Hi Giuiori,
loriolo makes a lot of good points.

You want to learn the process and become the expert you are in good hands here on the forum.

If you can provide the name for the NiCoCrAly we can download the tech bulletin for the powder and make some suggestions based on the current parameters you are using.

John

Hi Giuiori,
Which spray equipment are you using PT-F4? and which measurement system for flow? FMR, SLPM or SCFH?

John

Hi John,
sorry for delay.
yes i use pt-f4, Ar (SLPM) 50, H2 (slpm) 8, I=600+/-15 A, V= 63-69 volt.

Where can i find information from technical bulletin?

Thanks,

Regards.

Hi giuiori,
Oerlikon has replaced many of the tech bulletins and have removed the spraying parameters, I can not seem to find older versions online...

You may just want to lower your amperage to about 500A and use a spray distance of 105mm - 125mm, this should help reduce the oxidation in your bond coat.

You can also try lowering your Primary to 35-slpm and secondary to 6-slpm.

Best of luck,
John

RE: oxides APS process
Hi Giuori
Some time it seems oxides but could be unmelt particles, that are caused by wrong gun geometry, and you have powder building around the powder injector, I send to you parameters that could work well
