Arc Wire Spraying Bond Strength
Hello
I would like to rebuild a bearing journal 4inches diameter using the Arc Spraying. However I don't have the Bond wire instead I have the Eutectic Xuperbond powder that I use in powder flame spraying. The powder has the same alloy composition as the Bond wire . My question is , is it possible to use the Xuperbond powder then use 13% chrome wire for the top coat. Will the Bond be strong enough?
Could the experts on the forum please help.
Thanks Cool

RE: Arc Wire Spraying Bond Strength
My opinion/preference - I wouldn't use the flame then arc spray. As the 2 coatings will have different chemical strengths.

Depending on the application the bond strength of the stainless alone would probably be fine. Bond coat arc spray would have a bond strength of around 9000 psi, stainless may be around 6000 psi ? (dont quote me on those figures) so its still relatively high. As long as the coating isnt too thick i.e +0.030" then it would be fine if its just a straight forward bearing journal as there is no form of abrasion or significant wear on the coating. As long as you have a good blast profile then it should be fine.

As I said the above is my personal opinion/preference other people on the sight may have a different opinion

RE: Arc Wire Spraying Bond Strength
I would not recommend you flame spray for bond coat & finally arc spray for top coat. For bearing journals I think best option is Wire arc spray for both bond coat & top coat. Trying some other ways will be development work.

Thanks

Hi wtaz,

Arc Spray Max Bond Coat : 9700 Psi
Powder Flame Spray Bond Coat : 6000-7000 Psi
ArcSprayed 13Cr Steel bonding :4000 Psi

Thanks very much for the info I'm slowly grasping the idea however is it possible is it ok to powder flame spray the Bond coat then arc spray the top coat will the final Arc spray finish bond with the powder bond coat ?
