Flame spray aluminuim
Hi Guys

I need urgent assistance.

We quoted a job for a customer on which they supplied us with limited information.

They required us to blast and aluminuim flame spray steel pipes.

After site setup was done they supplied us with a document containing their requirements. The specification calls for Arc spray, adhesion of 1000 to 2000 psi, surface profile 75-125. The data sheet we have on the aluminuim wire says that flame spray application will achieve up to 800 psi. How do I go about improving the adhesion of the coating ? Will heating the steel help allot or will a courser profile do the trick ?

ThanksSmile

RE: Flame spray aluminuim
If all you have is combustion guns, then you are in trouble. 1000 psi MAY be possible, but you will need to do some trial and error testing with the same alloy steel and various blast profiles. Your combustion ratio needs to be very well controlled. The more angular your grit is the better off you will be. I would suggest virgin (first time used) aluminum oxide at a fairly large mesh (if you are dealing with mild steel, then I'd try something like a 20/60 blend to start if you have it on hand). Be sure that the pieces are free of grease, oil, other surface contaminates BEFORE BLASTING, because if you trap contaminates in the profile, then in my experience combustion just can't produce the results you need.

If you know anyone with an electric thermal arc machine that is reasonably local, then you should call them and notify your client that producing specifications like this after the work has already started is poor form and is going to cost them additional funds. It would be a tough conversation, but I believe it is the best way to meet spec. and get the work done to an acceptable level of quality. 1000-2000 psi adhesion with an arc gun spraying aluminum is childs play.

Hi WULF

Tend to agree with MichiganMan. If specification calls for arc spray, then really you should not be flame spraying. Arc spray applied correctly should have no problems with achieving well over 1000 psi.

As far as improving adhesion, preheating and a coarser surface profile (probably more important sharper/more angular profile) should help.

I use arc spray the Al, easy to get 200 psi. But the 75-125 surface is not easy, you may need to polish the surface after coating.
2000 psi
