Coating of coal Boiler tube wall
Dear all,
We have the job for coating Coal boiler tube wall with 97MXC - 600 mic of thickness in the 24 meter-34meter elevation from the basement of the boiler, total area 4 x 9 meters , 2 ares, and every horizontal area | the distance between base metal and coating metal | with gradient in order to avoid from sharp edge..
Does everyone have any experience to apply this application ? , since one suggestion comes for directly using 97MXC withour Bonding TAFA 75B but the specification has to use bonding.
Also for Top Sealer, it is better to use it or withour sealer ? we will do the job by next May 2011..

Dear Iwan,

I have reviewed the effect of carbide kind, 1 years ago.
The result is chromium carbide to be better than tungsten carbide at high temperature erosion condition.
And Liquidmetal's armacor wire has good wettability, but that has no carbide particle.

Please keep this information.

Do you use a bonding for your last job ? and what the effect of the top coat, cos' according to our friend if the porosity leaks until the bonding and top coat will more faster to worn out or removed..? is that true or not ?

All boilers are not created equal. Before answering your questions there is some key information that would be needed.

1) What kind of boiler? Its good to know its coal fired, but is it CFB, Tangential burner, etc.? This answers a lot of questions as to what problems the boiler will see and what temps it should operate at.

2) The selection of MXC suggests an abrasive condition, but is there also a corrosion concern based on fuel and boiler configuration?

3) Sealer depends largely on Temps. and if there is a corrosion issue. If abrasion is almost entirely the cause of the problem, then sealer is probably unncessary. If there is a signifigant corrosion factor, then seal it if you can.

We recently carried out a boiler tube coating work. I dont think the positioning of the burners play an importnat role in the coating selection. What should be clarified is: Grade of coal used (to evaluate abrasion / erosion; coal with high ash shall have larger abrasion etc) as well as the burner type (gas used) and whether the boiler is high temp high pressure, low temp boiler etc.
However, if many of these conditions cannot be finalized upon, I would suggest a Cr3C2NiCr coating using the HVOF process to a thickness of 250-300 microns without any required bond coat. If a bond coat is really desired, an MCrAlY (like an AMDRY 9954) should be suitable as it would give you resistance to high oxidation
