  Metco 444
Posted by: KevGarty - 03-14-2023, 01:13 AM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - Replies (4)

Hi All,

Been a while since I posted anything.

We have an application that requires Metco 444 sprayed with a spec of:

Porosity - < 7.5%
Hardness - 80 - 88 HRT

We have sprayed a few samples but cant quite get under the 7.5% porosity. Would anyone be willing to share some parameters that would meet the spec above? We have a lab here to carry out Micro's etc but just looking to speed up the process

Thanks in advance

Kev

Video Superfinisher from KGS Swiss
Posted by: Stephen Booth - 03-05-2023, 10:11 AM - Forum: Products and Services - No Replies

Superfinishers Microfinishing Frequently Asked Questions
Many different terms are used for Microfinishing. Polishing, Superfinishing, finishing, and mirror finishing, also sanding, linishing or just finishing.
1) What is Microfinishing?
Microfinishing is a finishing process using Microfinishing Film to achieve target surface finish requirements, every time.

Microfinishing quickly and efficiently achieves any Ra, Rz, Rmax, Bearing Ratio Area and other surface finish parameters that might be specified.

Microfinishing is the most consistent method of obtaining these surface finishes.
2) How does Microfinishing work?
The Microfinishing process utilizes a precision-coated abrasive called Microfinishing Film. Microfinishing Films are available from 0.05 micron to 180-micron mineral size. (Note:  That is 60 mesh up to 10,000 mesh) The micro abrasives are applied to the workpiece in a constantly indexing fashion, therefore all areas of a large roll are always in contact with new fresh abrasive.
The micron grade of abrasive used determines the surface finish.
3) What materials can be Micro finished?
Microfinishing can finish any material: from soft rubber and urethane to HVAF/HVOF hard tungsten carbide. Stainless steel, copper, chrome plating, ceramic coating and cast iron
4) What types of parts or rolls can be Microfinished?
Virtually any size part can be Microfinished. Companies are finishing fuel injector parts, transmission components, shock absorber rods, valve stems and many other small components. Paper mills are Microfinishing rolls that can be up to 5-meter diameter and 14-meter long. Exceptionally large Copper foil drums and Yankee dryer drums are also finished using this process.
5) Can I afford to implement Microfinishing into my production process?
If a very consistent surface finish is required on your parts, this process is the most economical method. It is productive, cost efficient and easy to operate.
6) What types of Microfinishing machinery are available?
Any industry can use Microfinishing in their operation. Microfinishing attachments can be mounted on any lathe or cylindrical grinder.

Many styles of production machines are also available, including thru feed and plunge Centerless, center driven, and turnkey roll finishing and custom machines built to a customer’s specification.
7) Is this Microfinishing a recent technology that is still in the experimental stage?
Microfinishing has been used for over 30 years. The automotive industry has been using this process to MicroFinish camshafts and crankshafts for many years. Steel mills and paper mills have been Microfinishing rolls for over 20 years.

Question Thermal spray galvanising Suppliers
Posted by: pcdmt - 02-19-2023, 09:34 AM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - Replies (3)

We do blasting and looking to add galvanising as a service on metal structures such as gates, railings, balconies etc.  Which European suppliers do you recommend to buy equipment and wires such as Zinc/Alu, and aluminuim.
It could be 2 different suppliers no problem with that.
The equipment will be used on a daily bases, 8hr shift therefore it needs to be of good quality.  The items will then be sprayed or powder coated.
Thank you

TAFA 5220 Gun, How often do you replace the stabilizer assembly?
Posted by: Hoon Lee - 02-16-2023, 09:37 AM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - No Replies

Hello everyone.

My question is the same as the title. : How OFTEN do you replace the stabilizer assembly?

I've been using TAFA 5220 gun for 6 months, but the combustion pressure is weird, so I'm going to replace the Stabilizer unit.

I wonder if it's normal to replace it in 6 months.

How are you using it?

The problem is solved.

It was confirmed that the hall in the Stabilizer unit was blocked.

There is no need to replace the unit in 6 months.

Pencil Ball Mill Shaft- Journal Bearing Area HVOF Coating Issue
Posted by: tobjung - 02-02-2023, 06:44 PM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - No Replies

Dear forum

We've serviced Ball Mill's shaft bearing area with HVOF coating and we failed. After 1-2 days of running, the coating was peel off and had many blisters all over the shaft area. (See picture)
Now, with hydrodynamic bronze journal bearing system, it should not be any impact on coating during operation. But, it is an ideal situation. When we disassembled the journal bearing from the shaft, we saw bronze color adhered on the shaft surface as in the pictures. Anyone know what's going on ? In the end we have to grind HVOF out and undersized the shaft. Under HVOF coating we have arc spray coating with Ni5Al with a thickness of 0.2mm on 3 different locations along with the shaft material itself (See final result). And that's the final surface that works just fine. Now the customer have been operating the Ball mill for months with no problem. Here are some details.

Ball Mill specifications:
Type: Overflow Ball Mill
Weight: Ball Mill = 50 Tons, Ball steels and products = 50 Tons. Total = 100 Tons
Journal Bearing: Bronze hydrodynamic journal bearing
Repairing area: Dia. 1070mm x L 460mm

Thermal Spray specifications:
Coating process: HVOF Coating
Coating Material: Ni20Cr as bond coating + SS420 for top coat (0.2mm)
Grinding and polishing
(Underneath coating on 3 different locations: Arc spray with Ni5Al 0.2mm)

Please advice

Best regards

Bug Praxair powder feeder 1264 malfunction
Posted by: JeroenB - 01-25-2023, 07:17 PM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - Replies (1)

Dear Thermal Spray experts,

We have two identical Praxair powder feeders model 1264. Both are well-maintained and are running fine for years and years.

Last week we noticed a reduced buildup on one of our HVOF installations. We changed powder feeders and the problem was solved.

We compared both powder feeders on one product and the buildup was only have with the "problematic" powder feeder. The powder consumption was also half so it is a feed problem.

We have disassembled the powder feeder already twice and checked all items below:
1. We changed the slotted disc for a new one
2. We checked that all nitrogen & powder channels are free
3. We checked the RPM settings of the machine with the actual revolutions
4. We changed all wear parts with new ones

The problem still remains... Could you please share problems that you have had with your powder feeder installations so that I could find some inspiration as to where the problem might occur?

Thank you,

Jeroen Belis
