Question How to read a Media Size vs. Intensity chart
Posted by: gejohn - 02-15-2007, 02:48 PM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - Replies (2)

I am trying to figure out how to read the chart in our standard practice manual. We are glass bead peening a part per the manual, which instructs:

Use Glass Bead Size 6 ( CP2238 ) or Glass Bead Size 5 ( CP2219 ) at an Almen intensity of F15N. Since I don't know how to past a picture in my message, it will be hard to explain the chart. I can try e-mailing it to you. On the left hand side of the chart shows "N Intensity" with two columns labeled "Inches" and "Afnor". The x-axis is labeled "Diameter of Glass Beads". My question is what is on the chart itself which has vertical lines with corresponding glass bead sizes.

My dilemna is that I am showing that with a F15N, the intensity should be 0.010"-0.014"N, but how do I double check this?

hardness not high enough, how to treat again?
Posted by: j603avo - 02-13-2007, 04:32 PM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - Replies (2)

Hello everybody,

here is the problem:

2 anvils (as used in roller hemming process) were supposed to be hardened to HRC 55.
After carrying out some hardness testing, I found an average hardness of 50 HRC and some places as low as HRC 42.
The company responsible for the treatment has obviously used a flame hardening process which is not very reliable and messed up.

Is there an "easy" way of improving the hardness of those hemming beds?, taking into account that:
?? - Toolings are already install in the customer's workshop, and cannot be move into an oven or anywhere else
?? - They are made of MoCr cast steel
?? - customer will check the hardness with a standard Rockwell C tester, so bulk hardness is not mandatory...

Is a second flame hardening possible? or wouldn't it make things worse i.e. soften the surface?

Thanks.

Hi Administrators.
Couldn't find out from the Help-files how to make a reply to anything, without duplicating the original re/question. If we have a longer discussion concerning the same thread, then every in-between reply is duplicated (taking needless space) and making it idle knowledge. Don't know, may be this is the structure of the Forum, and I should continue as previously?

PS. How do one change the forum setup to show the latest reply or comment etc. to be in the front row, when one opens the SEF?

how to increase TBC deposit speed?
Posted by: derek - 01-31-2007, 07:39 PM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - Replies (11)

I spraied TBC bond coat and top coat using SG-100. The bond coat was no problem but the ceramic coat's deposit speed was too low.
The parameter is:
Ar:87 SCFH(primary gas)
He:43 SCFH(secondary gas)
Ar: 18 SCFH(carrier gas)

36V and 600A with 3 inch spray distance and CPW388 powder.
After 20 passes, only build up 0.003inch.

Any help will be appreciated.

Question Coating for ceramic composite tool
Posted by: murt100 - 01-31-2007, 03:22 PM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - Replies (3)

I am working on a project looking at sourcing a sealer for a ceramic composite material.

We are making high temperature internally-heated composite molds for the aerospace industry based on embedding electrical resistance wires within a ceramic-like material reinforced with glass fibers. Temperatures may reach up to 250C.

The problem is that when cured, the ceramic material has an inherent porosity ? this means that is very difficult to achieve full vacuum on the A-side when materials are processed in production (pre-preg vacuum bagging). We need to find a suitable sealer that can be sprayed on and cured after the mold is made. The sealer must be temperature-resistant, tough, damage/scratch resistant and provide full vacuum integrity. We also need to be able to apply a mould release periodically to assist in part removal.

Ideally, we need a sealer that can be applied in-house, as the moulds would in some cases be too large to send away for treatment.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
