  Isotropic reflector ideas please
Posted by: Supersmithy - 09-09-2020, 03:33 PM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - No Replies

Hi there,

If this community doesn't have the answer I'm at a loss Big Grin

I'm wanting to create an isotropic reflector of infrared light. That is, a metal panel that I can point a thermal imaging camera at and what the camera will see is the reflective temperature of the entire room - be that the camera operator, a radiator on an adjacent wall etc etc.

The 'target' wants to be in the order of 200x200mm in size and importantly we want to produce lots that all behave in the same way i.e. a repeatable process.

Current line of thought is:

3mm polished aluminium sheet to start
CNC blasting using a fairly large grit, glass bead or peaner

The challenge is identifying an approach that can be applied consistently whilst creating fairly deep large indents (curved or flat faces) that are smooth/don't imprint a roughness, retaining the overall reflectiveness....whilst also not deforming the flat plate. A concern about aluminium would also be that it might dull and be less effective with time but SS is perhaps too hard to dent and form? A final finishing process could also be considered.

Any thoughts on process options, suggested grits and beads to try as well as other ideas welcome. And if I could be pointed in the direction of a company that might be able to help with samples, that would be even better!

Many Thanks

  Porosity problem - HVOF
Posted by: thaisrms - 08-27-2020, 04:26 AM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - Replies (6)

Dear,

my company had a porosity problem in the carbide coatings (tungsten, chromium, tungsten + chromium, etc.) by an air-cooled HVOF system. This problem started recently and we were unable to resolve it. We believed it was a problem with the equipment calibration, but due to the corona virus, it was not possible to bring a technician to our company.

We then decided to purchase a new MEC MDJ2700 water-cooled equipment - propylene.

We used the following parameters to apply the woka3302 powder (WC 10Ni):
O2: 250 lpm, 10 bar
C3H6: 80 lpm, 8 bar
Air: 390 lpm, 9 bar
N2: 20 lpm, 9 bar
Feed rate: 35 g / min (4 rpm)
Distance: 240 mm

When we performed the penetrating liquid test, the result was the same as in the past: no crack, but less than 30 seconds later the piece was COMPLETELY red.

Our compressed air is completely dry and free of impurities (network of activated carbon filters recently added) and the fuel gas cannot be agreed since the equipment has a vaporizer that is kept at 55 degrees celsius.

Do any of you have any idea what's going on?

Sorry for my english, hope you can understand.

Thank you very much for your attention.

  Metallography Evaluation
Posted by: vcduramais - 08-06-2020, 01:14 PM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - No Replies

Dear all,

hope you are doing fine.

I made asked a new company (due to covid-19 the one I used to do is not opperating) for a metallografy analisys of my WC 10Ni (-45/+15) coating sprayed with HVOF air cooled (GTV 720.000 - propylene). I'm having porosity problem resulting in cylinder rods "undermining oil" when they leave the cylinder. I'm doing this test so I can find the problem and to compare the coating from this equipment with the one I'm going to do with the new equipment our company is acquiring (MEC 2700).

I'm ataching the microphtografy so you can se what is going one. I can't tell if there was a poor preparation or if this is actually what is going on.

If our coating is this poor, can you please tell me if it could be due to compressed air contaminated with oil?

Thank you and best regards

Too many small particles in my coating
Posted by: devil72 - 08-04-2020, 07:12 AM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - Replies (1)

Dear all,

I hope you are all doing fine in this unforgettable year 2020.

I sprayed 2 different WC10Co4Cr powder with a HVAF system, one is 10-38um and another I user a bimodal 5-30um power which contains 40% nano sized WC.

But for both powder, WC grain size / distribution in coatings is not as good as expected while WC grain fineness homogeneity in powder is much better.

What could possibly cause so many heterogeneity grains in coatings ? Too much heat?

Thanks a lot~

[BUY] Looking for METCO 12E or newer
Posted by: foumke - 07-24-2020, 11:33 AM - Forum: Products and Services - Replies (6)

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to buy a functioning Metco metalizing gun for my powdercoat installation.

It's mainly for metalizing small parts but the most important thing is that I can get spare parts if needed, that's why it has to be a metco 12e or newer.

Please let me know if you have something. It doesn't have to be a set ( would be nice if it was Big Grin )

Location is Belgium, Europa for shipment.

Best Regards,
Roy

Blemish in flame sprayed self fluxing nickel based coating
Posted by: etelatal - 07-22-2020, 08:12 AM - Forum: Surface Engineering Threads - Replies (4)

PIC

Hi guys, this is a flame sprayed Nickel boron coating that has been post treated in a sintering furnace. This weird blemish appeared during sintering (not sure if the image is visible). The powder is metco 16C, the surface has been grit blasted before spraying. Base material is duplex steel. Any ideas as to what this might be or what is could be the cause of it?

br.
Olli
