friction properties
Hello,
I would like to know what are the differents of friction coeficiant between hard crome (plating process) and stellite coating in pair with heated up to 900C temperature steel
Best regards
Arturas

RE: friction properties
Hi Arturas

Generally, I would expect hard chromium plating to have the lower coefficient of friction. But handling steel at 900C I'm not sure. I would expect stellite coatings to be more durable particularly at higher temperatures. Maximum service temperature of hard chromium plating is commonly quoted at around 400C and hardness drops of considerably after 200 or 300C.

RE: friction properties
Hello
I still work with this project about replacement hard chrome with Stelite coating and I have some doubt . my question is why in some papers there is information that hard chrome coating can be successfully used for temperatures over 1000C?
And also very important thing is what maximum static surface pressure can withstand fused stellite or Ni base coating. As I know hard chromium this value is about 1000N/mm2
Thank You

RE: friction properties
Hi Arturas

Melting point of chromium is around 1900 C, so that would certainly be the upper limit as a solid coating.

Hard chromium electroplate at ambient temperatures can be up to ~ 1000 HV, after 200-300 C hardness decreases, above 700 C hardness drops considerably due to annealing, possibly down to ~ 90 HV.

I have no doubt that hard chromium could be used at high temperatures for special applications, but my knowledge on this is limited.

I would expect a fused Co or Ni based coatings to withstand greater static surface pressure than hard chromium.

I think we need to be careful here, as the coating I assume is in contact with steel at 900 C, but not necessarily experiencing the full heating effect.

I think the only sure way to answer your questions would be to test both in actual or simulated conditions.

RE: friction properties
Chrmium as a high temperature oxidation and corrosion resistance coating material provides protection below 1000C, and for higher temperature wear resistance Al provides better protection.
For high temperature wear resistance properties of Stellites and Ni-base materials, please check with my two following papers
1.ITSC-95,Kobe, Japan,vol2,proceedings of symposium,p31-34
2.Microstructural Science,vol19,ASM-IMS conf. on envoronmental degradation of materials, Monterey,1992,p477-504
or in concise form in my first book.
