White metal- Babbitt load taking capacity

Hi All,

For a 92% tin based Babbitt layer, can anyone give me a ball park figure of the load bearing capacity of the coating done using ARC spray?

The client wants 1 ton per square inch of load capacity and the material is a roll chuck

Load bearing will vary pretty wildly based on spray parameters and even the geometry of the piece in question, not to mention the testing standard. You may be able to find someone who has recorded such a thing in the past, but you will probably have to do some testing yourself if the customer is dead set on seeing 2000 psi load bearing on his specific part. If there is a specific standard to which the customer wants that 2000psi, then you have a starting point to search from, but without a standard the load by itself is meaningless.

The tension strenght for babbitt MB90 is about 11200 PSI, and the compression strenght will be about 14000, and with arc spray system, there are many applications on big bearing (shell of about 500 mm diameter), like the ones used in steel industries, and the tension strenght your customer want is 1/5 minus, the arc spray coating if It is well done, is like the ones done by fusion, pay attention when do you spray babbitt with arc spray system, specially if you do not have an anti explosion exhaust filter.
