Which powder should I use with my combustion flame spray gun?
Hi,

I am researching the adhession and cohession properties of thermal sprayed powders using an experimental nozzle. I am using the ASTM C633 test, but have not yet decided on what material I should use for my powder or for my substrate. The gun that I will be using will be a combustion thermal spray gun with a gravity fed powder hopper. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Any kind of substrates can be use, but carbon steel plate is more easier to buy in the market, for the powder in my opinion using low-melting point material is good for the trial, such as : Zinc, aluminum etc. the most important is surface preparation in order to achieve higher bonding strength.

Hey Thanks iwan-sedaryawan,

I ended up ordering a NiAl powder (Metco 450 NS) because it was the powder that was used in a similar test that I read about. I'm not sure about the melting temperature, but I'm assuming that it is quite a bit higher that zinc and aluminum. However, it was a powder that Metco said was usable with my gun (Metco 5P II combustion flame spray). I'm assuming that it will still be okay, but I'm still open to any suggestions since I'm still waiting on my powder.

Hi Reid

The choice I think it will depend on what your experimental nozzle is aimed at doing. The exothermic so called "one step coatings" or "self-bonding" coatings are good and popular coatings through the 5P-II (Metco 450 being in this group). If your experimental nozzle is aimed at say increasing particle velocity, then using a straight alloy or pure metal powder rather than a composited powder may be better choice.
