Tank that cant be blasted, ideas?
Hi everyone. I am hoping someone on here can offer some advice.

I am working on a defence refit project and we have two small steam condensate tank that will contain fresh water up to 100c. We have had a problem with the original coating giving up as it is past its life.

The problem is that we do not have the option to blast the surface to get the profile that most paint suppliers require (SA2.5) to guarantee the bond due to the risk of blast media entering the turbines which are directly linked to the tank. The best we can get is a st3 standard back to bare steel with an MPX bristle blaster.

I was thinking some kind of bonding system or lining may be feasable?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

54 views and no possible solutions. This problems is proving a lot harder to solve then I thought!

have you considered

Heavy Duty Roto Peen Flap :3M US

3M™ Heavy Duty Roto Peen Flap. Used for cleaning and de-scaling steel and concrete. A cleaner, cost-effective alternative to blasting.

Or vacuum blasting, with the Clemco Euductomatic?

Thanks for that Stephen. I will have a look in to those methods.

Regards,

Stuart
Does anybody know of a water soluble blast media that can achieve a SA2.5 surface profile? I know of soda blasting but this will not achieve such a profile.

Thanks

You would still get a decent enough profile with the MBX there has been a nace paper written on use of the MBX for surface Prep.

Couldn't you use the MBX then bond coat ? I know of engineering shops using this method for reclamation work.

Thanks Kev,

Yes I agree using the MBX is an effective method but the problem is finding a coating system (even with a bond coat) that can guarantee adhesion in immersed temperatures up to 100c with this type of surface preparation.

im sure you would get away with using a bond coat the bond strengths of that are as follows
Tensile 42.0 MPa (6,091 psi) on blasted surface 37.86 MPa (5,491 psi) on clean unprepared steel.
In Shear 103.42 MPa (15,000 psi) on blasted surface 64.12 MPa ( 9,300 psi) on clean unprepared steel.

Depends what your after ?

Thanks Kev,

Is this a specific brand of bond coat you are quoting? I would be keen to find more information on this.

The main issue is coating adhestion gaurantee as this is an important peice of defence equipment.

Regards.

Hi Stuart,

The wire is Manufactured by Metallisation Ltd in the UK. Speak with Stuart Milton on here or email stuartmilton@metallisation.com

He will be able to put you in touch with your local distributor if you are not in the UK

Good luck

Why not think of Dry Ice Blasting. I do not know whether it will give you right roughness.
