Surface Preparation
Hi all,

I want to calculate how much grits (Steel etc) are required for grit blasting of 4m shells and how much percentage of grits we can use again?

It will be dependant on many factors like; grit type and size, substrate condition and hardness, Blast equipment and parameters used, etc..

I think most people judge this from practical experience rather than a generic calculation formula. May be with a little more information, someone may be able to guide you on how much grit you may need to get for completion of a particular job.

RE: Surface Preparation
Grit size and type are major factors in blasting as well as pressures the trick is to figure the life of the grit before the surface roughness drops under the minimum RA you could try using a time frame of say 2 hours before changing the grit and try to use smaller amounts as in 5-7 pounds instead of 20-25 pounds at a time this may help in figuring how much is needed.

RE: Surface Preparation
Assuming your "shells" don't have a lot of irregular geometry (corners, sharp angles, etc.) and you are trying to reach "White Metal Cleanliness" you will probably start in the ballpark of 12 lb. per sq. ft. (based on Boiler slag and simple mild steel substrate). If you are blasting a harder substrate, then adjust the media accordingly, then you can backtrack the weight of media you will use by calculating volume to density. Practical experience is always the best adjustment, but if you need to guess out of thin air, then this should get you reasonably close (likely higher than actual). Re-use is so highly dependent on the application that you'd be best served to discuss with your grit distributor.
