Stainless Steel Coating
Dear Members,

Can a stainless steel coating be applied to a thickness of 500 microns without bond coat ? What are the pre-cautions one should take if the application is possible ? What is the maximum thickness possible without bond coat ?

Thanks & Regards,

Bagri

RE: Stainless Steel Coating
Hi Bagri

Could you tell us which stainless steel and the process you intend to use to apply coating? Some martensitic stainless steels like 13Cr steel produce very stress free, high thickness limitation coatings, while some austenitic stainless steels like 316 produce highly stressed coatings with a very limited thickness capability.

RE: Stainless Steel Coating
Dear Gordon,

I am looking at 304 in one application & 316 in another both to be coated using arc spray.

Regards,

Bagri

RE: Stainless Steel Coating
Hi Bagri

Both of these coatings will have high shrinkage, making them stressful and limited on thickness. Generally, I think 500 micrometre thickness would be possible on a well grit blasted steel surface, but this will be dependent on the substrate geometry and how coating edges are supported. I would strongly recommend a bond coat though. You may be able to get slightly thicker coatings, but I would worry about their reliability. If you need much thicker coatings, build up majority of thickness with something like a 13Cr steel and top off with your coatings, but again the addition of a bond coat would be highly recommended.

RE: Stainless Steel Coating
Thanx for your advice. Which Bond Coat would you recommend ? Usage of 95Ni5Al makes the project commercially unviable. Are there any other bond coats that can be used for SS 304 & SS 316 and are economical ?

Raghav Bagri

RE: Stainless Steel Coating
Hi Bagri

Understand your problem. NiFeCr bond coat (Metco 470AW type) should be good, but again probably too costly. All I can suggest is testing/evaluating your proposed coating system before you commit to the job.
