Spray on coating
Dear Gordon and Forum, about one week ago I sprayed HVOF coating "WC-10Co-4Cr", and now I have to spray more (thinker) on the existing coating. Could you kindly tell me what I should pay attention if I spray on a coating that coated one week ago, instead of newly grit blasted substrate? Thank you in advance.

RE: Spray on coating
Hi Jeffsays163

Well first thing would be cleanliness of the coating surface and how part has been stored since last coating. May require degreasing and light grit blasting to refresh surface. Preheating part before coating may also be important.

Even if done well, chances are that metallography would reveal a fault line between old and new coatings. In non-critical applications the risk may be acceptable, but I would think twice if the application has safety or high cost implications in case of failure. Any doubts, then best strip old coating and start again.
