Roller Bearing coating
Hi all,
I am offered to coat components of a large double roller bearing (outer ring 50 cm diameter and height of about 8 cm).
they need coating on inner and outer rings (races) and if possible on rollers too.
Is it applicable to coat this parts due to high contact stress and possibility of coating delaminations?

We have HVOF, wire arc and wire flame spray.
what material will fit the best if doing the job is possible?
the roller belong to a hot steel rolling line (the roller bearing does not get hot)
any advise or experiment?
Sal

Hi Sal

HVOF carbide coating may be worth experimenting with, BUT as we generally know thermal spray coatings tend not to be good with point loading.

Is this a dielectric application by any chance....just a guess

RE: Roller Bearing coating
What is the purpose of the coating? Will you grind the coating afterward to make it smooth, or leave it as-sprayed?

RE: Roller Bearing coating
sure we have to grind it
the surface of rings have been damaged (scratches) and need to be repaired.

RE: Roller Bearing coating
I don't think you are going to have much success coating a bearing. The steel is very hard, and you will never get a good blast profile. As Gordon said, the coating will not be very strong to withstand the loads from the rollers.

We have sprayed onto hard steels before with our HVAF gun, and it worked because the particles were not liquid when they hit the surface of the part. The particles were able to penetrate the surface and embed themselves to build a strong coating. Our HVAF coatings have been shown to withstand 3.5 GPa point loads. You will never get that with an HVOF gun.

RE: Roller Bearing coating
There is not any application for the roller bearings, so replace it with a new one is the once solution. I only did for big roller zinc anticorrosion coatings or ceramic dielectric coatings.
