Ra value 1.6 to 1.7µM in CGL POT Stabilizer roll
Question Hai friends, One of our new customer looking for TC coating on their CGL POT Stabilizer roll with Ra value 1.6 to 1.7µM. We are using JP5000 gun. For other customers we achieved Ra 3.5 to 4.5 µM in WC/Co-88/12 (-45+15micron) powder.
If any one having experience with Ra value 1.6 to 1.7µM then please share your valuable suggestions. Thank you.

Hello Packiaraj,
Ra value 1.6 to 1.7 µm for HVOF coatings WC-Co is possible, but only when using very fine-grained powders (< 15 µm), "cold and fast" spray parameters (particle temperature <1300° C at a particle velocity of approx. 1000 m/s) and oblique spray angles (45-60°).
Such Ra values are certainly not possible with your powder -45+15 micron.

I am not sure that fine-grained powders can be realized on JP5000 together with the necessary parameters. We have used Thermico burners OD CoolFlow for such layers (up to Ra = 1.2 µm).

Dear Vadim
Thanks for your valuable suggestion. Also please suggest for Ra value after grit blasting. Normally we keeps Ra 6 to7 µM after blasting.

Dear Packiaraj,

In my experience, the roughness of the substrate only influences the roughness of the layer surface with thin coatings (<100 microns). With a typical coating thickness of 300 microns, the roughness of the substrate no longer matters.
