RE: Metco 204 NSG thickness

Are you have any information about how much maximum thickness to apply metco 204 NSG or TBC with plasma spray machine ??
and are u have idea for double coating like bond coat and top coat application, if we want to have more thickness, what we do to get best quality ?? what we must apply more thickness for bond coat or other parameter in main control be changed ??
Thanks, Regards

Hi Achmad,
Maximum allowable YSZ thickness is application dependent. The smaller the thickness, the safer the application, but less the heat-insulating effect. Especially with thermally shock- and / or mechanically loaded components, this layer must not be too thick.
For example, in a stationary gas turbine, the maximum YSZ thicknesses may be roughly as follows:
Rotating turbine blades: 200-300 microns
Standing turbine blades: 300-500 microns
Plates of the combustion chamber: over 1000 microns

Dear Vadim
Thanks for your information, but how the method to apply thicker 204 NSG until over 500 micron ??
is it we must get more thicker bond coat amdry 962 ?? or any other method to do it ?
Thanks

Hi Achmad,
The thickness of the bond coats has nothing to do with the thickness of the topcoat. MCrAlY-bond coats serves much more as oxidation protection as a adhasion layer. You can apply very thick YSZ layers completely without bond coats on nickel-based alloys as well as on steel, aluminum and other substrates.
To be able to apply a very thick (> 1 mm) YSZ-layer without flaking you have to pay attention to two things:
1. As thin as possible individual layers (<1 microns per pass), which are realized at a high relative speed between burner and component (> 5 m/s).
2. The largest possible spray distance and the associated high porosity of the layer (with porosities > 15%, very large thicknesses are possible).

Vadim

Hi Vadim, Thanks a lot for its information. I hope we can discuss all about thermal spray next time.
