Marine Coating Applications
Dear all,

We are a Thermal Spray company operating on the west coast of Canada. While we deal with many trades ie: forestry, mining, pulp & paper to name a few we have not tried to tap into the shipyard industry of which there are many on the west coast. We are currently talking to Lloyd's of London on doing some pre approval and assessments on some coatings on various substrates which it seems we need to do to get our foot in the door. Sorry to be so long winded here!

My question would be can anybody give me some direction as to whether or not repairs to such things as tail shaft, propeller shafts are being carried out in other regions similar to ours? The industry as I see it out here seems to be, just make a new shaft.

I have another question but will post it separately.

Thanks,

Dale

RE: Marine Shaft Repair
Hi Dale

Sign0016 to the Surface Engineering Forum.

I think a limited amount of thermal spray repairs are being carried out. Main stumbling block is not for technical reasons, but reasons of approvals from bodies like Lloyds Register. Try and keep that foot wedged in the door to keep it open Happy0193

Doing a quick search, little info was returned. A few companies claim Lloyds approvals, but don't declare what for. This is the only link to a company doing this type of work I could find (link dead).

Also, I would try to involve your thermal spray equipment manufacturer/supplier. I know some of the major ones have had dealings with Lloyds, so they could potentially help and give guidance (sorry that's about all I can say).

RE: Marine Shaft Repair
Hi,
There was a paper describing repair of propeller shaft by thermal spraying in Royal Navy, a copy of which I forwarded to Dr.Sam Nistala of Actis,UK.I do not have a copy. Dr Nistala found it useful and following is a copy of his letter

To: "DR. RAM CHATTOPADHYAY" <drrammandira@yahoo.com>

Dear Ram,
I can not place a Value on this paper you sent me. It is ABOVE all valuation.
It is PRICELESS. You should be PROUD that you are one in a Million or Billion. No one in India could boast to have located this piece of VITAL information............. SO AUTHENTIC.
I have printed 20 copies of the paper you sent me and gave it to every one in the NAVY so that it would be KNOWN to all as a Valuable contribution from Dr Ram.

You can contact Sam for necessary information
