Inconel 625 coating on flange surface
Dear members,
To avoid crevice corrosion on flange gasket seating surface we are planning to carry out Inconel625 coating on CS flange by thermal spray in the existing pressure vessel at site.
I need clarification on the following:-
1)Up to max of what thickness can be coated by thermal spray(we need 3-4 mm thick coating )
2)Which method is best one for the above coating?
3)Whether bond coat is required?
4)Is it possible to do machining after INCO625 Coating to create surface roughness?
5)If machining is done will there any debonding between Carbon steel to Inco625 coating.

This is possible to spray inconel 625.
1)and 2) 3-4 mm is very thick, only way I think to do this is HPHVOF (kerosene HVOF) like JP5000 - wokajet etc. I think it's possible but never do this.

3) I don't think any bondcoat is needed

4-5) I think it's possible but never do more than rectification process.

Generally agree with landemarre's comments.

Why so thick? would it be possible to make gasket thicker?

Crevice corrosion is a complex issue, just using a corrosion resistant coating may not be the complete solution.

1 and 2) You could arc spray Inconel625 to that sort of thickness. It would not be as dense as HVOF and the usual sensible process precautions to minimise coating stress build up would need to be followed.

3) Generally, bond strength is always improved with a bond coat - a thin coating of 75E NiAl will help. However, 625 sprayed onto a blasted clean surface will normally stick well and may meet your needs.

4) Arc sprayed 625 can be machined - usual rules apply - not to big a cut etc.

5) See points 3 and 4 above. Less chance of debonding if you take care when machining and apply a bond coat.

Stuart - what sort of usage of Inconel would you expect for Arc spray to 3mm thickness ? I am estimating 12kg / m2 ?

Typical coverage would be circa 0.9kg/sqm/100microns. This has no allowance for overspray, over-thickness etc., just assume 'perfect' spray conditions onto a flat plate.
