INFO ON ROKIDE SPRAY SYSTEM

Dear Members,

We are having an existing Thermal Spray system from CASTODYN DS8000. We priarily use the system for Spraying CERAMIC COATINGS. We are planning to expand our capacity and are evaluating a new product ROKIDE MASTER JET from SAINT-GOBAIN.

The System uses CERAMIC STICK/RODS.

We would like to know the follwoing:-

1. Is it better then the conventional Powder Spray Torch.
2. The capital cost is higher then the conventional system But is it economical on maintenance & running cost.

We will appreciate feed backs on the matter to make a final decision.

1. Generally I would say they are better, in some cases approaching that of plasma spray.

2. Not sure on this one, but certainly lower than plasma spray.

The Rokide system applies a much better coating than the traditional powder flame spray, like the Castodyn, Terodyn, 5P or other torches. The equipment investment in the Rokide is probably more expensive than the Standard Powder torches, and even more important the consumable rods are really expensive per kg.

Yet, the Rokide coatings of Chrome Oxide are EXCELLENT in comparison to standard flame spray ceramic.

I would say similar, though it is difficult compare. Making a comparison between ROCKIDE C and Metco 136F and 136CP (chromium oxide/silica) the wear resistance qualities are claimed to be very similar. One advantage ROCKIDE C had was a much higher thickness limitation, and I know Metco developed 136CP (coarser version of 136F) to be competitive where thick coatings were necessary (at the expense of density). Coating density wise I think plasma spray would be better with the right choice of powder. ROCKIDE coatings have been around a long time and are highly regarded by those using the coatings.

In fact it depend of your need.

For alumina coating, Rokide coating is more porous, more irregular but if you do thermal cycling on it results are far better for Rokide than for classical plasma spraying alumina coating.

I realize the original questions was on Powder Flame vs Rod Ceramic Spraying, but I would like to add a bit of information.

1. Rods suitable for Rokide are also available from Mogul contact to MOGUL METALLIZING GMBH Helmut Strauss or Mr. Sunk strauss@mogulmetallizing.com and office@mogulmetallizing.com prices are interesting and product is good.

2. In field trials of Rokide C vs Powder Flame Spray, our workshop uses Rokide and competition uses Powder Flame Spray, our coatings over the last 10 years have performed much better in the field, and the customers keep coming back to us.

3. Rokide vs Plasma, a Rokide system will cost about USD 25K and the supporting facilities can be rather simple. Plasma Spray will cost UPWARDS of USD 130K plus robot, and coating booth

Rokide Rods are expensive, but they have their place in the business of Repair, especially small Maintenance shops doing Industrial repairs.

Absolutely agree with Stephen on his views..

ROKIDE sprayed Cr2O3 are excellent coatings and we are regularly using this system for coating on small parts and small part repairs. Coatings are ground and polished to mirror finish

ROKIDE Vs Powder combustion spray for Cr2O3 coatings are actually no comparison, with ROKIDE systems beating the other hands down! Actually, the DE of Cr2O3 using a 5P kind of a system is probably lower than 20%, not to mention very poor bond strength

ROKIDE Vs Plasma: Plasma has a clear advantage of continuous spraying over ROKIDE for larger parts - for ROKIDE, feeding of individual rods is a limitation...Coating properties for both are very similar ...
