How much powder need to get a coatings?????
Dear all,

I want to spray calcium phosphate powder with 20 g/min powder feed rate with a coating thickness of 200 um. The substrate size is (50*30*3mm). But I am not sure how much powder i need to sieve to get a coatings. Could anyone please give me a roughly idea how much powder probably i need to sieve or I need to put in powder feeder at least to get a coatings. I know this will vary according to process parameters but i just want to to know roughly a estimation.

Is there anyone can help me. Thanks a lot.

You Have to need Deposition effect rate about your powder and system as your fuel. For ex. with propane HVOF with WC Co,

1 m2 area - 1,5 kg,2 kg powder - 100 micron coating.

What is your %DE ? if it %65- %50 you can use this 1m2 1,5kg 100 micron

Thanks for your comments. assume the DE is around 40-50%. I am looking for plasma spray. Could you please help me to get a rough idea about how much powder i need for one spray?

Hi Fahad

I can only guess at a powder requirement of around 0.5 - 1 kg for 1 m2 for 0.1mm thick coating, so 1 - 2 kg needed for 1 m2 for 0.2mm coating. You need to work out what the total spray area is, which will be much greater than area of just the part. I think you will looking at something like 100-200g. Just bear in mind most of the powder will not end up as a coating on this small part.

To calculate powder consumption, I first calculate the volume of the coating (length * width * thickness). I divide this by the deposit efficiency and also by the target efficiency. Target efficiency is how long the gun is pointed at the part divided by the total cycle time. For a flat part like yours, you can divide the length by (length plus 150 mm overshoot on each side). In your case, target efficiency = 50/(50+(2*150))=14%. Numerically, this looks like Vpowder = Vcoating / (DE)(TE). If you know the density of the coating, you can calculate the weight of powder from the volume.

That's very useful and important formula to be shared thanks for that and i would like to know depending upon different type of powder the volume required would also change, am i right........?

No, the volume of the powder required to make a coating does not change based on the density. The weight of the powder changes due to density.

Hey Guys well i think that powdered covering provides a challenging cover of colour that is very the beginning proof. This is essential when generating areas that are intended to find their houses on trucks and other devices that see large use. Thanks!!
