HELP TO DEPOSIT SPRAY & FUSE COATING OF STELLITE POWDER --- REG
Dear Members,

Please share information regarding stellite -6 coating with spray & fuse process and please suggest good gun to do this coating.

The thickness of coating is 2 to 2.5mm and substrate is Stainless Steel material.

Regards

We have sprayed some very nice Stellite 6 coatings with our AC-HVAF gun. The coatings are very dense, so fusing is not really necessary. If we would fuse them, we would not expect the coating to shrink or crack. When we have sprayed other fusible powders, this was our experience.

Hi Termika

I want to develop spray and fuse coating of stellite -6 only. i do not want to do with HVOF gun.

Hi All

A bit of input, the original Stellite 6 cannot be spray and fused. It can be sprayed, with HVOF or Flame and left in the as sprayed condition or laser fused. I do not think you will be successful with Oxy Acetylene fusing of S6

However, if you have Deloro Stellite 6 SF

(link dead)

Stellite SF6 Co Bal. that has some fluxing agents, like BSi etc then you can spray and fuse it like a Ni Base Self Fluxing.

What Stephen say is correct. It requies some amount of self fluxing metals as addition.
I have sprayed and fused Eutalite Universal Of Eutectic and Delloro SF 6. Also pl let me know which type of ss you are using?

I am trying to deposit deloro SF 6 Powder only.

The substrate material is X8CrNiMoVNb 16 13 Stainless Steel.

I have to deposit 0.6mm thick Stellite-6 (SF 6) deposition on Spindles having dia 80mm and 1000mm Length.

We tried a lot to get good deposition, but failed and we think that heat input is not sufficient.

Please suggest suitable fusing torch which will give sufficient heat put to carry Stellite 6 deposition on Spindle (Dia 80 X 1000mmL0.

dear sreenuvundela,

fusing torches from IBEDA Germany are good.

You will face a few challenges on this part and substrate and coating....................

The stainless has relatively high thermal expansion, which might cause cracking of coating
Stainless has a tendency to oxidize during heating
the part is relatively long, assuming massive or solid will need more heat
coating is thick

suggestions:
very clean surface before coating or preheat
preheat to about 100 C
grit blast while 100C
spray thin coat of the stellite 6 SF powder (just enough to cover the surface of the part, maybe 50 micron)
continue heating to say 300 to 350 C
apply the coating of the STELLITE ® 6SF material to thickness (remember it shrinks during fusing by about 30%)
fuse with 2 or 3 torches

Note
I would use burners below the part to keep the heat inside
Slow cool in vermeculite

I agree with procedure writteeen by stephen, but if you must have any problem with fusion, you can add a layer of a Ni Base Self Fluxing alloy, with a good fusing point , in order to have a controlled fusion temperature and as well as you maut have an oxidation an corrosion layer proteccion during the fusion.

It requires extensive skills to control heat input of the job. The job which you have explained will take sweat out of the operator.
For stainless steels always use low hardness self fluxing powder as base layer.
Best of Luck
