Flame Spray with Liquid Precursor
Hi,
Tomorrow i will try a new technique in thermal spray. Flame Spray with liquid precursor Al2O3 to 304S.S substrate. I use as feedstock aluminum nitrate dissolved in isopropanol (flammable)
Can anyone help me how dangerous this could be?Do i have to dissolved it in distilled water before i use it?I'm afraid that this will be a problem to the organic solution cause is not resoluble in water..Any advise will be helpfull. Smile
I will inform you about my results..if anyone interested
(hope to be alive after this attempt..hehe)

Regards..

Hi Aioa

Sounds like an interesting, although possibly exciting/risky project Big Grin

No experience or good knowledge with your particular set-up or aluminium nitrate, so my comments should not be relied upon.

First, aluminium nitrate is a strong oxidising agent so I would have concerns with mixing/dissolving in isopropanol or other organic solvent.

(fuel + oxidant = Mad0233 )

Really not sure on stability here, but I sense risk. If you must Cool very small scale first Happy0193

May be worth just trying water based solution by itself. Although, this will be acidic so you will need to be careful what this comes into contact with.

Make sure you have good extraction/personal protective equipment, as I'm sure you know oxides of nitrogen will be a bye product as well as your intended nano-sized aluminium oxide.

I would certainly be interested in how you get on and just advise to keep it really small scale to start with, just in case the worst happens. Good luck.

Hey Gordon,
I think you are right but i don't know the results for spraying aluminum nitrate dissolved in distilled water..Today is a hard day..I have to believe that the high pressure in precursor (2-3 bar) should be enough for leave the flame outside..I'll try to keep low oxide/fuel to my torch..
Thanks for your advise..
Hope everything to be alright.

See you all later..Smile

Hope to see you next week Happy0193 Seriously though, make good your health and safety and assess risk. Best being over prepared in situations like this is better than being caught out. We don't mind your gun melting down, but we would like to see you back on the forum healthy Smile Good Luck.
