Dull Chisel Test
Gentlemen, we are doing some TSA for onsite field welds, having previously coated the spools. As this is only a small area the QC requirments are lowered (we must use same equipment / applicators etc as per the spool coatings.)
One of the clients suggestions is that we use a "Dull chisel test" to check for adhesion on the field welds, rather than doing conventional test plates and using an adhesion tester. While I can use a hammer and "dull chisel" as poorly as anyone else, does anyone have any additional documentation / reference material or standards?

RE: Dull Chisel Test
The Dull Chisel Test is primitive and may induce failure in the impact location - "Destructive Testing". The results of which will only be 'measurable' if your preparation/application is very poor. Global testing/inspection specs do vary but the most accepted is the adhesion test.

You are probably already familiar with the USACE document EM 1110-2-3401, "Engineering and Design THERMAL SPRAYING: NEW CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE" - Paragraph "9-15. Adhesion Testing for Quality Control"

Cheers
