Cutting blades for paper industry
Hi everyone.

We will couting blades for paper industry. I did some research on the subject. In general, driving the process for doing this stuff. (3mm WC fastening plate.)

Now we want to coat 800 micron WC Co by HVOF system. Do you have engaged in work on the subject?

I think no real problem with Kerozene HVOF (JP5000 or Wokajet) or with HVAF, and probably difficult with bad results with other HVOF (ex DJ2xxx)

You can try the ESD process.

Hi Metallurgy_eng

What type of paper cutting machines?

Why this thick? Is it purely to enable regrinding when worn? If not I would go much thinner.

Curious why you would think so, as unfortunately we have a DJ 27** in our lab.

We coated 750 micron WC Co on the blades with c2h2 TopGun. When we was ginding angle of 23 o the sharp of WC broken and spilled.
Normally glued to the back of the knife plate 3 mm WC. And Between finish tungsten becomes razor sharp. We would like to apply a coating technique different from bonding technique.

Thickness is more than necessary. Because when we do Grinding angle ,the blade needs to appear in the oral part of the layer.

Dear Metal_Eng
I'd like to share our experience with cutting knives for paper industry. I assume you are talking about Guillotine knive, not a circle one. The main problem there is that you need to keep a constant angle of the blade as long as possible to achieve the proper cutting of large number of sheets. That is why on common blades you find a strip of WC 2-3 mm thick, soldered to the steel base. Given that it is sharpened at an angle, it gives a working surface of WC 4-5 mm. I doubt that you can form a coating this thick that will be able to "hang" from the substrate. We did some tests sparying Tungsten Carbide 0,3 mm on knife, and run into the problem of loosing cutting anle much faster than the traditional knife. Although it created a "self-sharpening" effect, it lead to paper jamming due to incorrect angle.
We tried that on guillotine cutting machines at the printing factory. But at other applications coatings work very well. Hope this helps.
