Build Up without grit blasting
Hi SEF members,

We have a problam about powder flame spray coating.

We have a big diameter of shaft. We want to coat this shaft bear wear with 6P-II with metco 42C. But we cant grid blasting this bearing surface.

Can we coat this bearing surface with 6P-II without grid plasting?

Yes, but you will need to use a bond coat like Metco 450 or 480 or a "one step" coating like Metco 442 as a replacement for Metco 42. In my mind this on to grit blasted surface should be the way to go.

Really, I would look into getting some portable grit blasting equipment, the type with the brush heads and recirculating unit. I would much prefer to know that the substrate preparation is at its best, maximising bonding and reliability.

Hi Metallurgy Engg

I support gordon suggestions and portable shot blasting machines also available.

You can think alternatives like knurling, grooving etc for sample preparation and HVOF process is very suitable if you are unable to get good substrate preparation.

RE: Build Up without grid blasting
Dear gordon and sreenivas,

Currently, we only have this opportunity. We can not do grid blasting on this bearing. In fact, I have news for portable blasting device. But i want to know if we do knurling and grooving on the substrate without gridblasting, and use metco 450 ns bond coat and than apply metco 42 c top lyer, Does it work without problems? İs it possible to coat like this?

RE: Build Up without grid blasting
Dear Sir
We have experience in the coating on the shafts of large diameter for the conveyor of the plant of the Dead Sea (Israel) . Coating was deposited by our Flame Spray Termika-2 on bearing position. The diameter of the shaft in this area of 900 mm. Surface preparation was carried out hand grinder. Surfaces are clean and specially created roughness. You can see the application process on our website.

You can ruff up the surface with sandpaper, 60 grit etc. Then clean with acetone or similar. Do a bond coat like gordon mentioned.
