Babbitt - Bonding strength
Dear all,
We need any information regarding bonding strength of Babbitt sprayed by arc-Spraying process, since my customer needs 5000 psi, I looked at Tafa wire 04T just only 2870 psi / 19.8 MPa, is any experiences in Babbitt after sprayed as a bearing for power plant ? please let me know...
Appreciated to your kind attention..
Thanks & Regards,

RE: Babbitt - Bonding strength
Hi Iwan
That technical data indicate the bond strength for the Babbitt, but if you use Aluminum bronze as bond coating, you can reach more than 5.000 psi.

Thanks Luis..
Have you ever tried ? so bonding strength increase significantly by using Aluminum Bronze ...

Dear iwan,

Power plants use Babbitt bearings in many areas like ID fans, PA and FA fan bearings, turbine - thrust pad bearings etc

If you can pin point the usage area, I may be able to help you with the kind of Babbitt coating generally used as we have decent experience in doing the same
You can also visit our website for more info on Babbitt coatings

We've generally sprayed copper as base coat for Babbitt coatings and till date have never had any compliant from any customer

Is your requirement to coat on fresh shells or repair of babbit layer? Because these would require different treatments

RE: Babbitt - Bonding strength
Dear Shantanu,
Part is Pad-Bearing to be 16 segments, re-babbitt, and we also tried in plate with and without bonding Al-Bronze..
Result was only 18 MPa/2.610 psi for bonding one but only 11MPa/1.595 psi for non-bonding..how could it to be 5000 psi even above as per Luis's comment ?.
Thanks for your advise...

Dear iwan,

If we've used the puddling method for Reba biting, we've always used tinning as the base coat. Tin soldering followed by babbit latest by puddling and then machining etc has always yielded good results. We've never checked the bond strength of these coatings, but the coating generally passes the ultrasonic test after the coating

For ARC spray, I'm not sure of AL- bronze or for that matter even Ni-Al and how much bond strength it can increase from a directly applied Babbitt layer. But for a good bond strength, it is also very important that the bearing surface ( shell) is freed from all oil and lubricants in the shell which requires a considerable amount of effort and patience!

Regards

Shantanu

RE: Babbitt - Bonding strength
Dear Shantanu,
Tin soldering maybe the good solution for high bonding strength, I have ever heard this application, maybe next time I will apply this...
have a nice week end..

Yes off course I did a lot of bearing, for example ILVA, a big steel manufacturer in Italy use to coat bearing since 600 mm diam. with an automatic system and arc spray with aluminum bronze (Metco Sprabronze AA) as boncoat without any problem, the important think, is to remove all the previous coating, and be sure that there isn't any trace of oil or grease and sandblast the surface in order to obtain a very good roughness.
Best regards
Luigi
