Alumina coating
Dear Gordon what should be the thickness of pure alumina coating by plasma spray to withstand a DC voltage of 1000Volts. Is there a chart or any caluculation to find the thickness required to withstand a particular voltage.

RE: Alumina coating
Hi Ravi

It will depend very much on the specific alumina powder and plasma parameters. Typically, 50 - 700 volts/0.001" (25 micrometre) dielectric strength. Premium fine high purity alumina spray with optimum parameters (1% porosity or less) giving best values. Higher and far more consistent values obtained on sealed coatings.

For plasma spray alumina, for 1000Volts you should have around 200micrometers of alumina coating.
