One important point of preheating that has not be mentioned is
for avoiding water condensation on the substrate.
I have seen coatings applied in some quite extreme conditions
(temperature wise) some apparently successful, though I
would not recommend this without thorough testing.
Generally I would advocate a preheat around the 100 C mark for
steels, nickel alloys (not aluminium, magnesium, polymers
etc..), possibly a little higher if you have good temperature
control during spraying. Aim to control temperature during spraying
at or near to your original preheat temperature avoiding as much as
possible any temperature gradients or changes in temperature during
the process.
