Depends on what you mean by microcracks. Most thermal spray
ceramic coatings naturally contain microcracks of the type which
are hard to resolve using normal metallography and tend only to
span a few particle splats at most.
These ceramic coatings by there nature tend to be somewhat
permeable (porosity, microcracks, particle boundaries
etc.)so sealing these coatings is very important along with
using a corrosion resistant bond coat material.
Increasing coating thickness does increase the barrier effect, but
depending on your coating type and method of application the
coating will have a maximum coating thickness limitation. It is
wise to stay well within this limitation as cracking and
delamination problems may increase with thickness.
