Yes, it is possible to spray titanium alloys using normal atmospheric plasma spray methods and the material is very exothermic during spraying like nickel aluminium composites. It will depend on what coating qualities you are after. These alloys readily oxidise and also react or absorb gases like nitrogen and hydrogen. Using typical spraying parameters coatings tend to be heavily oxidised, hard and somewhat brittle but produce very high bond strengths. Plasma gases have a significant effect. Nitrogen and hydrogen are best avoided, argon only or argon/helium are best for cleaner coatings. The use of an argon gas shroud around the plasma is recommended and is a common method used with these materials. If you are after very clean coatings, argon filled chamber or vacuum (low pressure) plasma spray will be required.
