It is not wise to purely specify a thermal spray coating by a
Rockwell C hardness alone. 13Cr steel and molybdenum coatings have
been used on crankshafts (mainly repair) successfully for
many years, very often out performing none coated steels with much
higher hardness.
With arc spray your choice of wires to achieve hardness above 50
HRC becomes limited to a few composite or cored wires (material
too hard to make conventional wire). Some wires that may be
worth looking at are high chromium steels/irons based materials
like TAFA 95MXC or 96MXC, Sulzer Metco SM 8222, Armacor M or 16 and
others...
