Hi Erik
I think the only way compressive stresses in the surface of a substrate will effect the residual stresses form in a coating would be if those substrate stresses were relaxed during or after spraying. During normal spraying conditions I doubt whether this is significant, particularly when you consider all the other factors effecting residual stress build-up.
