: Hi all

: I am investigating differences between a chromium surface and a chrome oxide ceramic coating used in the synthetic yarn manufacturing process. I am looking at rate of wear, heat transfer, surface characteristics etc. If anyone can help me with information or point me to useful websites, I will be very grateful.

Hi Daniel

I have not been able to find any decent links to this subject yet. Plasma Sprayed Chromium Oxide coatings are harder (1200 - 1800 vpn depending on coating type)and more wear resisistant to fibre than hard chomium plating. Chromium oxide has a much lower thermal conductivity and will act as a thermal barrier. Differences in coefficient of friction (heat generated)I'm not so sure of, but chromium oxide coatings can be produced in a number of different surface finishes: rough as spray texture, smooth but nodular by brushing, ground or superfinished to suit desired frictional properties.

Chromium oxide coatings have been used in the textile industry sucessfully for many years on guides and rolls.
