Hi Ben
It is possible to thermal spray zinc coatings and other some coatings onto this type of substrate. It is important that care is taken in the spray process to keep plastic substrates cool, this along with good surface preparation is the key to successful coatings. Not sure about comparative bond strengths between adhesive cladding metal and thermal spray coatings, I guess they would be in the same ball park. At the end of the day I think you will need to test both approaches and compare performance and cost.
