We have a small wheel (20mm diameter, 2mm thick) currently being made out of ceramic or carbon filled thermoset plastic. The ceramic performs great due to its rigidity at temperature and wear resistance, but is expensive. The thermoset performs less well, and is a little less expensive... We only need the outside of the wheel to have this rigidity and wear resistance, however- otherwise we could use a cheap molded plastic wheel for a couple cents.
I m trying to figure out if a molded plastic wheel (maybe a glass filled nylon, or...) with a ceramic coating could work in our application, both cost and performance wise. The coating would need to cost less than $.10 per wheel in quantities of 100k. Can those with experience here let me know if this is practical with a coating, or am I on the wrong track?
