: I am having a large steel part coated by the aluminum flame spray process. The coating is to help withstand a 350 degree F WITH STEAM environment. I am planning to follow up the flame spray with a sealer to seal the porosity. (There is some interesting information on this site about porosity actually being a good thing! Hmmm)

: I have a number of specs (Military and Commercial) that I am using for references, since I am new to this process. One commercial spec recommends "aluminum phenolic sealer". I have not found a product by this description. I did find one called "phenolic". Military spec states "heat resistant aluminum paint per spec TT-P-28". Is one of these materials better than the other for my application (Heat + Steam)? Is there something even better?

: Thanks,
: Brian

Hi Brian

A good clear phenolic resin sealer (similar to Sulzer Metco - Metcoseal AP)may be ok for this application. Usually these are good for up to 400 F and are known to be resistant to boiling water.

I have not come across an aluminium loaded phenolic sealer for this purpose. Heat resistant aluminium paint and sealers (Metcoseal SA)are usually silicone resin based and would normally be recommended for aluminium coatings at this temperature.

Sealers based on epoxy resins may also be suitable. At the end of the day, most of organic sealer/paint systems fail long before the aluminium coating fails.
