Matt, have you considered coating your dies?
MoST is a PVD solid film lubricant coating for the metalforming industry that improves tool performance. As a solid film lubricant, it exhibits a coefficient of friction (0.01 to 0.06), which is lower than that of Teflon or graphite.
It differs from other solid film lubricants in that it has a hardness similar to that of PVD TiN (2000 VHN minimum). Therefore, it combines lubricity and resistance to wear not available from any other PVD or CVD technique.
This combination of properties enhances tool performance by resisting adhesive and abrasive wear, the most common causes for failure of metalforming tools. The coating also reduces or eliminates the need for spray lubricants offering a tremendous economic advantage. Its lubricity reduces friction between the tool and workpiece, and produces better metal flow. This can eliminate the need for post forming cleaning operations.
MoST's superior resistance to galling results in a significant reduction in the amount of die maintenance-related downtime, while producing better part finishes.
MoST originally developed at Teer Coatings Ltd in the U.K. is now licensed by IonBond for the U.S. Market
